Episode 030 · Out Nov 3, 2026
Who invented the ★ rating?
Born November 3, 1801: Karl Baedeker, a bookseller from Koblenz, turned an old Rhine guide into the travel guides everyone trusted – routes, prices and hotels checked in person, and a ★ for what was worth it. One hotel in Vevey lost its star after giving him a bad room. But the star wasn't his invention: John Murray's English handbooks had it first, and in 1820 Mariana Starke rated art with exclamation marks (!!!).
