Daniel Boone never wore a coonskin cap
Born November 2, 1734 (Oct 22 on the old calendar): Daniel Boone cut the Wilderness Road into Kentucky – land the Shawnee and Cherokee hunted on. Captured in 1778, he was adopted by a Shawnee family and named Sheltowee, "Big Turtle", then escaped 160 miles home and was tried for treason (not guilty). The famous coonskin cap? His son said he despised them – he always wore a hat.
