The Earl of Sandwich didn't invent the sandwich

Born 3 November 1718 (Britain's old calendar): John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich. The famous story – 24 hours at the gambling table, beef between toast – comes from a single French travel book. His biographer thinks he ate it at his desk. Bread with fillings is far older; he only gave it a name.
